In 1972, Hollywood superstar Jerry Lewis traveled to Europe to shoot “The Day The Clown Cried”. It was a movie directed by and starring Lewis, about a clown thrown into a concentration camp by the Nazis.
It was meant to be his masterpiece, irresistible Oscar-bait, a chance for him to be taken seriously at last.
It was absolutely terrible.
Based on a true story, not told before, and a real movie, not seen before, our film, both hilarious and occasionally shocking, Clown is a dark, dark comedy about dictatorial egos and misogyny, the lengths people will go to to make a film happen (or stop it), the limits of humour and ‘genius’, and the damage a monomaniacal leader can do in a pre-Me Too world where the star is everything.
Situated somewhere between The Disaster Artist, Heart Of Darkness and The Producers - Clown is the cautionary tale of a cult film that no-one has ever seen.
